Last week, the quote 'to be one’s own boss is the best thing in the world’ got me saying the loudest “Oh, really?!” of my life!
I feel I am becoming more and more irritated by the ecosystem's needless overselling of the very idea of entrepreneurship. Read that quote, I started thinking of why are we always being sold the idea of starting a business for the mere thought that it will help you become “independent”; independent from a boss, from 9-6 working hours, from strict and pre-scheduled annual leaves, among other ‘independencies'.
In fact, it is true that being your own boss brings you more independence, power, decision-making privileges, and more benefits. Yet, this does not come to you for free! In order to enjoy all those, as an entrepreneur, you need to master independent decision making, which can sometimes become a nerve wracking experience. In addition, being free of the 9-6 work routine can lead you to being caught up in working hours that extend way past that. In the face of mounting responsibilities, you will find yourself working nonstop for days on end! Proposals need to be prepared, emails have to be sent out, and deals must be closed. The more efficient you are, the faster you’ll arrive to payday! Next time you hear “To be your own boss is the best thing in the world,” ask yourself, is it really?!
As for now, if you feel stuck or lost, let's chat together. Reach out, I am happy to give you a fair share of my story and clarify some myths associated with the process!
